The start of the new school year is an exciting time not only for the children in the first grade. The \"big ones\" in the day-care centres are also preparing for the approaching change to school. With Rucksack KiTa, a language and family education programme is being launched in the Baumheide\/Milse neighbourhood of Bielefeld, which is aimed in particular at children growing up multilingually in their last year at daycare.<\/p>\r\n

On Wednesday (08.09.21), the kick-off event took place at the DRK Kita Mehlhausen. The heads and pedagogical staff of the pilot day-care centres, the Rucksack parent guides as well as representatives of the day-care centres and the primary school Milse, which is also involved, were invited. State programme coordinator Miriam Weilbrenner (MKFFI), social affairs department head Ingo N\u00fcrnberger and district mayor Holm Sternbacher contributed words of welcome.<\/p>\r\n

The Rucksack KiTa programme is an integral part of the educational landscape in many cities and municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia and throughout Germany. It is based on a particularly intensive form of educational partnership between the family and the daycare centre: supported by volunteer parent guides, the parents try out topics and activities once a week to promote language skills, which they then reinforce with the children at home in the respective family language. The declared goal of the Rucksack programme is not only the multilingual promotion of the children; it is also about the increased participation of the parents and the opening of the daycare centres with a view to diversity in the urban society.<\/p>\r\n

When the older kindergarten children start school next year, they and their parents can seamlessly enter the sister programme Rucksack Schule, which will initially be offered at the Milse primary school from the next school year. The direct linking of the two Rucksack programmes in the last year of kindergarten and the first year of school is the core of the transition concept \"Bielefeld Viaduct\", which was developed in close cooperation between the Municipal Integration Centre, the Education Office and the Youth Welfare Office of the city. The implementation of the concept is made possible not least thanks to funds from the integration budget.<\/p>\r\n

The daycare centres that are now starting (DRK Kita Mehlhausen and DRK Kita Traumheide, AWO Kita\/Familienzentrum Moenkamp and ev. Familienzentrum Baumheide) are entering the \"Bielefeld Viaduct\" as Rucksack pioneers. In the next few years, the city plans to expand the programme so that multilingual children in other neighbourhoods can leave the daycare centre for school with a backpack full of languages.
