On 23 and 25 August 2021, 64 participants watched Bettina Braun's Grimme Award-nominated documentary film digitally via Zoom. After a brief welcome and introduction of the director, the 90-minute film, which portrays realistic insights into the lives of an immigrant family from Romania in the middle of Dortmund's Nordstadt, formed the basis for the subsequent discussion with the director.<\/p>\n
The \"touching\", \"grandiose\" and \"under the skin\" work, characterised by identity and belonging, shows over a period of one and a half years how a family stands up for each other despite all adversities. The sense of belonging of Lucica and her children is shown in their unconditional and mutual support. In addition, the filmmaker's sometimes ambivalent relationship with the family is portrayed. \"On the one hand, it is characterised by a great deal of affection and respect for what has been achieved. On the other hand, however, marked by fatigue and frustration. There were always moments when one's own world of values differed from the family's world of values and vice versa\". For example, on the subject of school. \"It is important to Lucica that all children go to school. However, when she was overwhelmed herself or needed the children's help in everyday life, it also happened that she kept the children at home.\" This is not least due to the fact that her husband neglects his role as a father due to recurring prison sentences and does not contribute any financial support or help in raising the children.<\/p>\n
The director's discussion, which lasted almost an hour on both days of the event, provided further multifaceted insights from the various professional perspectives. It remains to be said: There is no one interpretation!<\/p>\n
Bettina Braun managed again and again to illustrate her experiences pictorially, punctuated with apt examples, alongside deep intimate insights into family life. A key moment was revealed during a screening of the film \"Nordstadtkinder-Stefan\" in the school context of a special school class: \"The children are not familiar with the fact that their real life world is shown on the screen and that someone like Lucica's second oldest son Stefan, who lives similarly to them, becomes the hero. Despite all the ambivalence, that's what's important to me and I hope I've succeeded in making Lucica and her children heroes.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, the director made it clear: \"My aim is not to lecture. The film is meant to make people think, not to give easy answers! Especially in the context of migration or social challenges. Here I want to give a deep insight, but not a monothematic perspective!\"<\/p>\n
The impulse of the KI-Recklinghausen, taken up by Miriam Weilbrenner (MKFFI) Sabine Leipski (IKEEP) and the Federal Transfer Team (ZfTI), to continue this important discourse was taken up intensively by all participants within the discussion. \"I am grateful to Ms. Braun for giving the family a voice! Telling these stories, but also listening to these stories or even enduring them, is our duty as long as we put children and their families through such living conditions in Germany.\"<\/p>\n
Together, within the plenary, the perspective was broadened, away from a deficit view, also within the dialogue. \"We need more children's books, more school books, more films to tell all these stories. Families like Lucica's are not a marginal issue, they are in our midst.\" The positive feedback from both days of the event shows that future formats should be a regular feature within the work with the Griffbereit and Rucksack KiTa programmes. Within the director's discussion, the many different life and professional perspectives of all participants contributed to the fact that the series of events was a complete success and a continuation is conceivable.<\/p>\nInformation on the film:
